I’ve been working remotely for the past few years, starting back when we first moved to Vermont in early 2007. In some ways being in a small office in the middle of Vermont has been ideal – it’s easy to get focus time, and distractions are easy to manage; just ignore the phone and close the email. Having Jonathan across the hall to bounce things off of when needing an opinion on things non-programmatic is awesome. I’ve loved having the Fat Hen across the street – the most amazing local organic food for simple lunches – walks down to the dam on Otter Creek after lunch, and a 10 minute commute on a scenic road with almost no traffic. Why would I give this up?
Well…I am giving it up. Starting at the end of August I will be taking on the role of Chief Information Officer, and Director of Production at the LiveTechnology Headquarters in Tuxedo Park, NY. This will be change back to Team Leadership and Process from R&D development these past few years.
Not everyone will agree with this, but working alone starts to be drain after a while – especially for a social person. I miss the team feeling and camaraderie that only happens from sharing the same space and problems with other like minds. And so that more than anything else is what’s driving this choice.
Since so much of my life is Vermont-based now, I’m going to transition down to Tuxedo for a few days a week for several months. By then hopefully we can find a place to live, rent out house out here, and make a go of it in the Hudson Valley.
